Ornate Carved Pier Cabinets

rosette Ornate Flame Mahogany Carved Pier Cabinets with Lancret's "Music Lesson" Vignettes New Listing!

Beautiful pair of bookmatch mahogany pier cabinets with reproductions of Lancret's painting "The Music Lesson" on each door.  The drawers are divided and lined in velvet for silver storage. Each door opens from the opposite side so they can be used alongside a buffet or sideboard. The sides are bookmatched veneers and the fronts are done in applied carving over bookmatched veneers.  The flash in some of the pictures makes the color look lighter than they are in person but the finish is all original.  The only apology is a small chip or two in the veneer along the lower edge (color touched up to blend in).

They measure 43" high x 21" across x 22-1/2" deep.

Cherry Center Table

rosette Cherry Center Table attributed to Hunzinger

This cherry center table is attributed to George Hunzinger, a furniture maker during the later half of the 19th century. Hunzinger came to the United States from Germany in 1855 and began manufacturing furniture in New York City. As was typical of Victorian era furniture, Hunzinger's pieces are highly ornate. Many of his original designs were patented.  Our cherry table featues a rectangular top with carved and molded rim, applied composition molded skirt, spiral turned posts, a shelf below with spiral turned gallery centered with ball ornaments, applied composition grotesque face corners, and splayed turned legs on cast brass and wood claw and ball feet. Condition is appropriate for age ... there are some minor splits to top, some small chips to applied molding, and the legs have been reinforced. Finish is original.

 The table measures 46" wide x 28" deep x 32" high.

Mary Webb Wood Chair

rosette Mary Webb Wood Crewel Embroidered Wing Chair

This is a beautiful vintage Queen Anne wing chair designed, signed and copyrighted by Mary Webb Wood. It is in like-new condition and even includes the original slip arm covers. A photocopy of an original ad (pictured below) reads as follows:

"Crewel embroidery ... a signed and copyrighted original, a new version of a much loved art form, which contains the lines and legends of many early cultures. Throughout the ages, the "Tree of Life" design has changed with the hand that designed it and this new and original "Tree" has grown from the secure roots of its past. This chair is the most outstanding of Woodmark's many superb values. And Woodmark is famous, countrywide, for both quality and value. The design was planned to fit the cutting patterns of this particular chair, also a Woodmark original, so that no precious and expensive embroidery would be wasted. These patterns have been sent to the Vale of Kashmir, where they are hand-embroidered on hand loom cotton. An added bonus is the free and gracious sharing of the results of long research, which is unusual in this industry ... This is truly an historic chair."

Chair measures 32" wide x 32" deep x 45" to center back top.

Victorian Cherry Coat Tree

rosette Victorian Cherry Coat Tree

This is one of the most unusual coat trees we have ever run across in all our years of dealing in antiques. This coat tree has three supports which attach to a chip-carved drip tray at the bottom via brass hooks and hangers. There is a chain in the center which provides support for umbrellas, canes, etc. There are brass rosettes with hooks staggered on each support ... 6 hooks in all. There are little brass rosette embellishments on the drip tray and at the top of each support as well. Good original finish with excellent patina; shows some very minor wear considering its age. We suspect there might have been a brass liner in the base at one time but, if there was, this is no longer with the piece. When the drip pan is removed, the supports can be folded together.

The height of the coat tree is 61", each leg support is actually 63-1/2" long. The drip pan measures 17-3/4" diameter. The measurements at the bottom between each leg when extended is 23" in a triangular configuration.

Oak Crystal Cabinet

rosette Quarter Sawn Oak Crystal Cabinet with Carved Crest

This is a very hard-to-find solid quarter-sawn (tiger) oak crystal cabinet with fully-mirrored back and base. It is spectacular breakfront with elaborately carved acanthus leaf cornices on each break. The top crest is also ornately carved from one end to the other with a large fan-shaped crest in the center. This is a quality-built piece of American-made furniture dating from turn-of-the-century. The center door is slightly stepped out from the side sections. There are three heavy glass shelves inside, one of which has a chipped corner on the back side. The mirrors are all excellent. As you can well imagine, this is an extremely heavy piece and does not break down for moving. It is very sturdy and not loose in any way. There never has been an interior light, but it would not be difficult to add one if you should so choose. Condition is fantastic original in a medium-dark shade of oak with the only flaw being about a 2" long sliver of wood missing off the back left top of the crown. It tapers from the back and is about 1/4" deep at the very back end. Don't miss the brass gargoyle keyhole cover on the door ... and yes, we do have the key.

Piece measures 54-1/2" wide x 18" deep x 74" overall.

Mahogany China Cabinet

rosetteCarved Mahogany Federal Style Serpentine Glass China

This is a lovely Federal style china cabinet in mahogany with carved details and rare serpentine glass center door. The top and sides are reeded and there are rosettes at the top of each reeded detail. The center of the top features carved ribbon bows with draping bellflowers. The front sidelight panels each have an overlay of mahogany fretwork topped with the same ribbon and bellflower design while the side glasses have a detailed fretwork overlay. There are three shaped glass shelves and a fully mirrored back for displaying your china or fine crystal. The door does lock for security. Finish is all original and there are only a very few minor blemishes or missing trim ... all of the fretwork is intact and unbroken. Please call if you have any questions as to condition.

This fine piece measures 54" wide x 59" high x 17-1/2" deep at center. Due to the fragile nature of this piece, we recommend picking up in store.

Mahogany Lingerie Chest

rosette Mahogany Lingerie Chest

This is a very rare flame mahogany lingerie chest. It is the only one of its kind we have ever run across! There are three recessed drawers on the top section with one larger drawer beneath. Brass hardware is all original. Openwork carved backsplash/crest is not original to the piece but is from the same time period and matches perfectly. It has been attached with two small angle brackets from behind and can be removed with no loss of integrity to the original piece if desired. This was the way it was purchased and we thought it was a nice addition, so we left it as it was. Entire piece has been refinished. Marked "Solid Honduras Mahogany Colonial Mfg. Co." inside one of the drawers.

Fancy Oak Slipper Rocker

rosette Fancy Oak Slipper Rocker with Pierced Backsplat, Shaped Saddle Seat

Tiger (or quarter-sawn) oak is one of the most beautiful woods that predominated the late 1800's furniture market. It's distinctive golden stripes resembled that of a tiger, hence the nickname "tiger" oak. This extremely desirable pattern in oak is obtained by quartering a log down the center, then each quarter section has to be cut on a diagonal from the center out, thereby getting only a few boards of any worthwhile width. This is the wood used in this lovely turn-of-the-century oak slipper rocker with its ornately pierced backsplat. Shaped saddle seat and back, turned spindles, and graceful hip rests give it a feminine flair. Perfect for the nursing mother!

Measures 21" wide x 34" high to top of back, 13" high to seat, and 30" deep at rockers.

Historical note: Slipper rockers were made lower than normal so that ladies could sit with their wide skirts spread over the sides and reach their feet to put their slippers on.

Sea Captain's Lap Desk

rosetteSea Captain's Rosewood Lap Desk with Secret Compartments Signed "John Ilsley, October 26, 1895"

This is a truly spectacular Sea Captain's Lap Desk made of rosewood and outfitted with brass mounts and dovetails. What makes this desk so special is the nameplate on the top bearing the name of the captain of the ship ... John Ilsley and the date October 26, 1895. What fun one could have tracking down the history of Captain Ilsley! The interior is fitted with all original parts including the original leather writing surfaces. The pictures speak for themselves ... be sure to scroll through all of the detailed images provided. This is a fabulous piece of history from a bygone era.  (Note ... key pictured is not original but does turn the lock mechanism)

*Writing boxes became very popular during the last part of the 18th century. The writing box or desk became titled the "lap desk" because the box was used on a table or on a lap. The socio-economic conditions in England during the last part of the 18th century made the lap desk very popular and useful. This was a time of expanded communication and increased commercial activity. The Sea Captain's Desk was unique ... it is the only desk that had such a complex design. The Sea Captain's witing box had secret compartments and drawers inside. The large brass straps and corners are also a design feature of the Sea Captain's lap desk.

The desk measures 19-3/4" wide x 10" deep x 7" high closed; 19-3/4" x 20-1/2" when open flat.
