Sterling Silver Vesta/Cigar Cutter

rosette Sterling Silver Combination Vesta & Cigar Cutter with Hand-Painted Enamel Portrait of Egyptian Goddess, by Horton & Allday, Birmingham, 1915

This is an absolutely stunning rare combination vesta and cigar cutter done in sterling silver in a hammered pebble design.  There is a large vignette on the front with a raised enamel hand-painted portrait of a lovely Egyptian goddess on a bright red background.  It is just gorgeous!  The case is hallmarked Birmiingham, 1915, and was made by Horton & Allday, a silversmith in business from 1885 - 1935. The left side top of the case has a small button which, when released, slides the cutter back out of the way. Then the cigar is inserted into the round hole in the top of the case.  When the button is pushed back in, the cigar is cut and the cut portion is pushed out the other side.  This mechanism was patented and is marked inside the lid "The Unity Patent".  There are also hallmarks inside the lid for Birmingham 1915 as well as additonal hallmarks on the inner rim (see all photos).  There is a striker plate on the very bottom of the case.  The entire piece is in excellent condition.  Measures 1-5/8" wide x 2" high x 5/8" deep counting the raised vignette.

Sterling Silver Vesta

rosette Sterling Silver Repoussé Vesta (Match Safe) with Figural Jester on Both Sides, F. S. Gilbert, Massachusetts

What a fun little chatelaine vesta this is!  All sterling silver repoussé, this vesta was made by the F. S. Gilbert Co. of North Attleboro, Massachusetts.  The company was in business from 1904 - 1915.  Both sides of the case are identical with a Jester at the top and bottom of each side.  There is a striker section across both sides of the bottom.  The tiny ring on the side is there to attach to a chatelaine so I would date this to the earlier of the date span.  Front of the case is in excellent condition, back side has a tiny ding in the center and edges have some teeny dints (not big enough to be dents lol).  The lid is spring loaded for a tight fit.  This would also be a great container for stamps, small pills, etc. for in your purse.   Measures 1" wide x 2-1/8" high x 3/8" deep counting the raised vignette.

Sterling Silver Cigarette Case

rosette Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Cigarette Case by J Gloster Ltd, Birmingham, 1934

This is a truly beautiful large sterling silver cigarette case in a full enamel guilloche front in snow white surrounded by true blue in contrasting guilloche designs.  The white portion has scalloped concentric rings radiating out from a central point in a rayed effect creating a hologram-like effect.  The border is dont in an intrice pebbled guilloche pattern with deco-inspired ribbons on each of the four sides.  The inside is finished in gold gilt and still has the elastic band to hold the cigarettes in place.  The hallmarks identify the maker as J Gloster Ltd of Birmingham, England.  The date stamp is for 1934.  On the other side of the interior is the name "Esther Pollecoff" in script.  I would dearly love to track down Esther's family and learn some of the history of this piece ... being involved in genealogy with Ancestry.com, I will see what I can uncover :-).  It is in excellent condition with no damage to the enamel other than a few miniscule scuffs only visible when held to light. Measures 3-1/4" x 2-3/4".

Aqua Enamel Guilloche Boudoir Clock

rosette Gorgeous Aqua Enamel Guilloche Hanging Boudoir Clock with Hand-painted Roses by Gubelin with 15 Jewel Swiss Movement

I just love this gorgeous large aqua enamel guilloche boudoir clock ... it has very pale pink hand-painted roses scattered all across the front.  This style of clock is rarely found ... it is meant to hang and there are two little "buttons" on the back from which to suspend a ribbon or chain.  The stem at the bottom which is to wind or set the clock is decorated with an inset turquoise jewel.  The clock was made by E Gubelin and has a 15 jewel Swiss movement.  Now for the apologies:  the clock's movement does run (see the video link below); however, the hands do not move.  I am not sure if this is simply that they are detached from the center post or not but it should be an easy fix since the main movement is running.  Secondly, there are some very faint hairlines in the enamel guilloche which are really extremely difficult to see with the naked eye ... my super close-up will point them out but in person, they are not really discernible unless you know where to look for them.  All in all it is a beautiful piece if for nothing more than display but could be made to be functional if one desires to do so.  Measures 3-1/2" wide x 4-1/2" high overall.  Diameter of the clock case itself is 3-3/8".

See video here of the movement working at time of this posting and be sure to view all the other pictures of this great piece!

Sterling Silver Cigarette Case

rosette Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with Sapphire Jewel and Enamel Stripes Dated 1926, Germany

This lovely art deco design cigarette case was made in Germany and is marked 900 sterling.  The Case has engine turned stripes on both sides and blue accent enameled stripes on the front.  There is a sapphire jeweled clasp as well.  The inside is finished in gold wash and has an inscription in German on the right inside half which, when transcribed, reads as follows:

"To my beloved Ernst, given with devotion from your Erna. Frankfurt am Main*, September 10, 1926".

*Frankfurt am Main is a city along the river Main in the center of Germany

I think it is sweet that their names were so similar ... Ernst and Erna ♥  There is another inscription on the left side of the interior which is also in German but the translation eludes me here (see photos).  If anyone can help out, feel free to email me.  The case is in excellent condition and is a wonderful collector's item.  Measures 3-1/2" x 3" x 1/2" deep.

Evans Enamel Guilloche Table Lighter

rosette Faberge Egg Style Blue Enamel Guilloche Decorator Table Lighter by Evans

This beautiful table lighter was made by Evans and features a rich blue enamel guilloche egg-shaped holder in the style of Faberge.  Fitted with brass ormolu trim and topped with a flame finial, it stands on an ornate gold base with layered feather designs.  Please look at the many pictures which will describe it much better than I can.  Each portion of the item is signed Evans and the lighter is original to the piece, not a replacement.  The enamel is all in excellent shape as is the entire piece.  It does not appear to have ever been used.   It measures 6-1/2" tall and the base plate is 2-1/4" diameter.

NOTE:  White marks on all photos are simply reflection of light.  Enameling is all excellent and the colors are true.

Figural Enamel Guilloche Case

rosette Sterling Silver Figural Enamel Guilloche Case with Hand-Painted Scene - Made in Austria

The quality of the painting on the lid of this fantastic enamel guilloche case looks like it could have been done by a master. The detail and depth of color simply could not be captured with a camera ... it is so much more beautiful in person.  It is 900 sterling with an Austrian mark dating it from 1867-1922 and the inside is gold vermeil.  The sides of the case are white enamel guilloche and there are some repairs made to the enameling (not very good but better than chips).  These repairs are mostly on the corners ... I have included close-ups which look considerably worse than in person.  The important part is the lid which is exceptionally fine with only a few very minor scuffs/scratches visible with a loupe or held to light ... very insignifant.  There are silver overlays on the two front corners and where the clasp is which are ornately engraved.  It is an outstanding piece!  Measures approximately 3" long x 1-3/4" wide x 1/2" deep (the lid is slightly curved).

Sterling Silver Traveling Inkwell

rosette Sterling Silver Heart-Shaped Traveling Inkwell by Black, Starr & Frost Circa 1900

What I love about antiques is the history and wonderment of the past and who might have owned these little treasures before I did.  When I hold this charming sterling silver inkwell, I almost get a sense of the lady whose hands held it.  With a monogram of JKC or GKC, I can imagine a gentleman giving this to his lady love as she embarks on a voyage -- perhaps on a ship across the sea -- with the request that she promise to write to him using this inkwell to dip her quill into as she pens love letters to him.  The heart shape surely puts this scenario in mind!  The intricate locking mechanism is quite unique ... the little heart tab on the center top lifts up and rotates to release the hasp.  Then there is a little button release that opens the actual lid of the inkwell.  Inside is housed a glass bottle for the ink and there would have been a piece of leather or rubber or cork in the lid portion that would clamp down over the bottle to seal it.  Obviously this is long gone as it would have deteriorated with age but all of the locking mechanisms work fine and hold tight.  This would be a great item to store small valuables in (with the bottle removed, of course) or just to admire on your dresser.  It was made by Black, Starr & Frost of New York circa 1900.  Condition-wise it is very good with 3 tiny dents on the bottom and a few around the edges but overall very nice shape (see photos).  Weighs a bit over 3 oz. without the bottle.  Measures 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 1-1/4" high.

Burlwood Box

rosette Steam-Bent Exotic Burlwood Hinged Box

This is an extraordinary little box and the beauty is in the details ... with the exception of the hinged lid, the base is made entirely of one piece of steam-bent exotic burlwood ... you can follow the grain up the sides and edges.  The lid is attached in an invisible hinge which is flush on the surface and on the inside.  It is quite a nice piece ... not sure what it was used for but there were traces of loose powder inside and it smells very pretty :-) ... notice the natural freeform style of the little lift tab.  With the exception of surface scuffing only visible when held to light or upon close inspection and a tiny chip at the left upper corner by the hinge, it is in excellent condition.  Snaps shut tightly so it would be excellent for pills.  It is a beautiful piece!  Measures a bit over 3-1/4" long x 2-3/8" wide x almost 5/8" deep.

Enamel Guilloche Letter Set

rosette Beautiful Pale Peach Pink Enamel Guilloche Desk/Letter Set Made in Germany in Original Box

This lovely little lady's desk/letter set consists of a tiny mechanical pencil, letter opener, and wax sealer all done in a pretty shade of pale peach pink enamel guilloche.  The metal has a rose tint to it and the only mark on it is "Germany" so I do not know what it is.  It does tarnish and is able to be polished.  The little pencil has lead in it and is in working condition ... there is a tiny ring on the end where you can attach it to a chain or chatelaine.  The letter opener is done in faux ivory (celluloid).  All three pieces are nestled in a velvet bed custom fitted to each item in a box which snaps securely shut for safekeeping.  The outside of the box shows some wear but all of the pieces inside are in excellent condition with the exception of one teeny fleabite on the end of the pencil (see pics).  The wax seal has a design on it which I am not sure what its significance might be.  Please be sure to look at the close-ups to appreciate the beauty of this set. The box measures 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 3/4" deep.  The wax seal is 2-1/8" long.  The letter opener is 3-1/4" long.  The pencil is 3" long counting the ring.  Please note that even though this is identical to the set immediately below, the price is higher simply because I paid more for it when I purchased it many years ago.

Enamel Guilloche Etui

rosette Rare Jeweled Pink Enamel Guilloche Sterling Silver Etui with Folding Scissors!

I have had this in my personal collection for many, many years as I love to collect rare etuis.  This one is done in a beautiful baby pink enamel guilloche on sterling silver body.  One tip has a large faceted pink jewel (replaced) and the other end has an open hole, presumably for allowing the thread to be pulled through to keep it clean while sewing.  Now for the best part:  when opened, there is a removable spindle with several colors of thread wound around it.  On one end is a brass cap which comes off to expose a holder for needles and an amazing little folding sewing scissors!  The scissors are held closed with a little flip-over catch and they are still quite sharp and cut fine.  The overall length of the piece is 2-1/4" about 5/8" diameter.  It is a beautiful piece in excellent condition with no apologies whatsoever.  Marked 935 sterling on the tip and another stamp mark on the inner rim which is not legible.

Enameled Servant's Bell

rosette Lovely Enameled Continental Servant's Bell with Beaded Jewel Trim

What a delightful item this is!  Continental origin from turn-of-the-century, it is done in enameling with hand-painted florals and lovely tiny beadwork jewels around the bottom.  There are also areas of red enameling with guilloche backgrounds at the very top and red beadwork jewels around the bottom.  The interior has a brass inner bell with clapper (this can be unscrewed from the handle and removed).  There are no markings of any kind but it was sold to me as continental origin.  Due to its age, there are several stress lines that are visible in the surface and a rough area around the bottom edge, probably from a very very old repair of some kind. I am not touching it and am leaving it as found.  I have had this in my personal collection for several years and it is a beautiful piece! It is not perfect, but it appears to be unless really looking close.  Bell portion measures a little over 2-3/4" diameter x 2-1/8" high.  If adding the brass cap and handle, it stands about 4-1/2" tall.

Lenox Tiny Alarm Clock

rosette Miniature Mother-of-Pearl Lenox Fleur de Lys de Paris Boudoir Clock in Cathedral Presentation Case

This is a gorgeous miniature mother-of-pearl boudoir clock by Lenox that is marked "Fleur de Lys de Paris" that I have treasured for years in my own collection.  The little clock nestles in a velvety lined cathedral double-door presentation case with brass latch.  The clock itself has mother-of-pearl trim around the face and on the base.  It is topped with a fleur de lis design on the top in keeping with the name.  The back of the case is richly engraved in a beautiful design remiscent of the early pocket watches.  The clock movement is Swiss and is running at this time.  When it is running, a little tiny pendulum can be seen swinging back and forth in the heart-shaped window at the bottom of the clock face ... just so sweet!  Clock measures 2-1/2" high x 1-1/2" wide.  Case is 2-3/4" high x 1-7/8" wide.  The only apology is a stain on the back top of the case, other than that everything is perfect!

Figural Opera Glasses

Figural Opera Glasses

rosette Stunning Figural Couple Pastoral Scene Opera Glasses with Removable Telescoping Handle

Gorgeous antique enameled opera with hand-painted young man and lady in a pastoral setting with lake scene which continues around to a garden statue on the back. Beautiful pastel colors on a powder blue background ... sooooo pretty! The detachable telescoping handle has the same lady approaching the lake and a house can be seen on the other side. The sights are done in mother-of-pearl and the base metal on the case is a silvertone. There is no manufacturer mark that I can find but it definitely appears French in origin. The telescoping handle can be used retracted or any length up to its full 9-1/4" extension. It is designed so that you can position it anywhere along its length and it will hold firmly.

These opera glasses are in very good condition with some minor wear to the surface of the figures (visible in close-ups). rosette Figural Cherubs Opera Glasses by Reballio & Zoon, Rotterdam, Holland

On the back are sheet music with a mandolin on one side and some type of bag instrument on the other. All of these are done on a rich cobalt background that was hard to photograph as it reflected the light back so detail was difficult to capture. Just remember that any light areas on the pictures are not scratches but reflections as the enameling is all in perfect condition! The sights are done in mother-of-pearl and the base metal on the case is a silvertone (not sure exactly what). Signed "REBALLIO & ZOON" on one sight and "ROTTERDAM" on the other.

Sterling Silver Calling Card Case

rosette Sterling Silver Enamel Guilloche Calling Card Case with Portrait

This lovely calling card case has been in my private collection for several years and has always been a favorite. The provenance that came with this piece stated:

'From a prominent Fort Wayne, Indiana, collector, this high quality calling card case dates from the late 1800's to very early 1900's. It features blue guilloche decoration front and back with the cover featuring a miniature portrait of a woman with no clothing evident, coyly running her hand through her long curly hair.  The portrait and sides of the case feature champleve enamel treatment in white. Inside the case there is worn gold vermeil wash and old Austro-Hungarian hallmarks for 960/1000 pure silver (purer than sterling). It also bears a number 1067 and another hallmark which cannot be made out.'

There is pocket wear to the surface of the enamel, scattered very minor losses in the tiny champleve squares, and some flaking on the perimeter of the portrait in the blue (see close-up). Overall at a glance it appears perfect. Case does not snap tightly but will remain closed. Measures approximately 3-1/4" x 2-5/8" x 3/8" overall.

Father Time Boudoir Alarm Clock

I have had this gorgeous clock in my private collection for some time now and have decided it is time to let someone else enjoy this fabulous piece!  I am not sure of the manufacturer, but it is a top quality item.  The case is bronze with brass backing.  The clock runs fine and the alarm also works.  I was told when I purchased it that the painting is on ivory but I have never tried to disassemble it to find out.  It seems totally plausible based on the quality of the piece.  The glass on the front has a beveled edge which is another sign of the excellent craftsmanship that went into this.  Be sure to look at the many pictures I have taken to show you how wonderful this is!  Measures 3" square.

Here is another adorable little boudoir clock from my private collection.  This one is a lovely shade of blue -- almost turquoise -- with tiny gold flowers and leaves.  The clock face is ornately engine-turned and the back of the case is beautifully engraved.  And the best thing about it?  It still works!!!  Of course, this is not surprising as the Swiss works were made by the Ovida Watch Co.  It is quite small measuring only 2-1/4" high x 1-1/2' wide x 1-3/8" deep at the base.  Please look at the many pictures for condition ... enameling is not perfect but because of the small size, it is very difficult to see ... priced accordingly!

Disclaimer:  This clock is guaranteed working at time of purchase; however, warranties have long since expired so no guarantees beyond that time are offered ;-)

Enamel Guilloche Sterling Silver Bell Push

rosette Gorgeous Pink Floral Enamel Guilloche and Sterling Silver Butler's Bell Push

Here is another lovely piece that I have held on to for years ... I just love enamel guilloche and particularly pinks and blues!  This is a very rare piece that came from an estate in New England and could be found in the grandest mansions.  Installed near a bedside table or favorite desk, these were wired to ring for the butler or housemaid.  The hand-painted roses are so delicate that it's hard to believe they aren't real!  The push-button appears to be mother-of-pearl.  Overall in very good condition with some very slight wear to the outermost edge (visible in pics).  Measures 1-1/2" diameter x 1-3/4" high approximately.

Sterling Silver and Enamel Guilloche Inkwell

rosette Sterling Silver Inkwell with Blue Enamel Guilloche Top by Marson & Jones, 1929

This is a very pretty sterling silver inkwell with a blue enamel guilloche top.  The hallmarks on the edge date it to 1929 and manufactured by Marson & Jones, Birmingham, England.  The enameling is in fairly good shape with a thin strip of wear right at the left side (barely visible).  The silver base has a beaded border encircling it midway down.  It is also in good shape with a few very minor dings in the silver, all in all typical age appropriate wear for a piece this old that was intended to be used.  Measures 2-1/8" diameter x 1-1/2" high.

Purple Floral Enamel Guilloche Opera Glasses

rosette French Purple Floral Enamel Guilloche Opera Glasses with Original Carrying Case

This rare pair of opera glasses was made in France around turn of the last century and are marked "Deroy Fabt Paris" on the top. They have mother-of-pearl eyepieces on brass metal with beautiful purple guilloche enameling with hand-painted flowers. There is a one very small chip on the bottom edge that is very difficult to see as it is in the dark area (see close-up in pics). Also, one of the eye lens has a crack in it ... it shows in the picture, but you cannot see it when looking into the glasses. All in all, this is a beautiful piece to either use or display in a case. Comes with original carrying case which measures approximately 4-1/2" x 2" x 2-3/4" high not including handle.

Enameled Etui

rosette Rich Cobalt Enameled Etui with Hand-Painted Rose - Still has Contents!

This is a wonderful little cobalt enameled etui (sewing kit) from the 1800's ... probably was silver on copper but most of the silver is worn away. Rich deep cobalt enameling on both front and back of case ... front has a hand-painted white rose while back is solid blue. Top is a matching cobalt enamel guilloche thimble which screws off to open the piece. Top of thimble has a glass needle pusher. There is damage on the thimble on both sides where it was gripped to unscrew it from the base; however, the front and back sides are fine. Interior has little attached pin cushion and original tiny brass thread holder. Lined in pink fabric. This is a great piece which has a lot of charm as well as functionality! Measures 3" long x 1" wide.
